Kathleen Tracy's love of quilting began in , when she picked up a book on small quilts and made one for her daughter's dolls. Using traditional blocks and reproduction fabrics, she designs quilts that are inspired by quilts from the past. Kathleen enjoys hand quilting and using scraps to make her quilts look like they came from another time. The history of quilting, the stitching together of layers of padding and fabric, may date back as far as BCE. For much of its history, quilting was primarily a practical technique to provide physical protection and insulation. However, decorative elements were often also present, and many quilts are now primarily art pieces.

Quilting with Alternative Fabric. Heather Thomas shows you several examples of quilts that utilize alternative fabrics, or fabrics that you don’t typically consider for quilting, including metals, silks and wools. By varying the fabrics that you use on your quilts, you’ll find that you can create fun pieces that are unique and eye-catching.
